Beginnings are easy. The real work to achieve a goal / level / solution comes after. Chance (or luck) is too random so improvement takes real commitment. Right?
So if it is so hard, why bother?
Spring has sprung and the world around us (in the northern hemisphere) is undergoing it's annual epic transformation - leaves sprouting from trees, bulbs pushing through the soil, birds returning and nesting to usher in the next generation. All this only happens because they ‘survived’ through winter months and continue to succeed against the early spring conditions (with the added bonus of natural predators). There will be failures but also success and the circle of life will continue - do you think nature ever asks ‘can I be bothered’?
❓ What if Roger Federer decided after a few bad games back in his teens ‘I can’t be bothered’?
❓ What if Eric Clapton had a couple of bad days learning guitar and put it down thinking ‘I can’t be bothered’?
❓ What if sometime before 1955 Martin Luther King Jr sat after a long, tiring, hard fought day and decided ‘I can’t be bothered’?
❓ What if your business process is costing you more than just time and money yet you keep saying ‘I can’t be bothered’ [to fix it]? ("I don’t have time" is pretty much the same thing)
So what makes the difference? What drives the likes of Federer, Clapton, Luther King Jr or indeed anyone to keep going and make a difference?
Love? Passion? Obsession? Guilt? Morals? Justice? Regulation? Health?
It's fair to say there has to be a motivation, a catalyst for changes and improvements to be sustained and to achieve desired results.
🏆 For sports persons like Federer, perhaps a singular drive to be the best and win at all costs.
🎸 For musicians like Clapton, maybe the love and passion to create music and express feelings, to bring out emotions in others.
⚖ For Luther King Jr, a drive to seek justice and harmony across all of God’s children (some dreams are bigger than others).
Perhaps in business the motivation is simply money but it could also be about employee wellbeing, customer satisfaction, service efficiency, regulatory compliance - whatever that motivation, it needs to be found and used to sustain meaningful change.
